Charles J. A. Wilson was a self-taught, marine artist who started his career as as artist at Bethlehem Shipbuilding, in East Boston, Massachusetts. This collection includes 6 volumes of images of ships, 4 of which are indexed. Most of the images come from newspapers, the majority of which are in black and white; one volume includes mostly images in color. Volume 1 includes images of windjammers, racing sloops and steamships; Volume 2 includes images of naval vessels; Volume 3 includes color images and prints of yachts and naval vessels; Volume 4 includes images of yachts, merchant vessels, and ships used during World War I; Volume 5 includes racers, whalers, and steamships; and Volume 6 includes pictures pertaining to World War II and allied forces in action at sea.

The Eagle was built in 1936 for the German Navy and was known as the Horst Wessel. It was taken over by the U.S. Coast Guard in 1946 and renamed Eagle.
